Reports from Niger say clashes between some farmers and nomadic cattle herders have led to the death of 18 people.
Authorities in Niger say the violence started near the village of Bangui, on the country’s southern border with Nigeria.
Livestock belonging to the ethnic Fulani herders reportedly damaged crops of a farmer. More than 20 people were injured in the incident.
“The nomadic herders fought with a farmer, whom they wounded. He was taken to the medical centre and everything started from there,” Oumarou Mohamane, Bangui’s mayor said, the Reuters news agency reports.
Many African countries have been battling the phenomenon of clashes between farmers and nomadic herders.
