US president Donald Trump last week said he had sent Nigeria 1,000 ventilators to help in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

President Trump on April 28 said he promised in a telephone call with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to help the West African nation with ventilators.

A similar promise was made by President Trump during conversations with leaders of Kenya, South Africa and Ethiopia.

South Africa is reported to have already received its promised ventilators this month.

During a tour of the Ford motor plant in Michigan, last week Mr. Trump said the US had just sent 1,000 ventilators to Nigeria.

But Nigeria’s information minister Lai Mohammed has said the country is yet to receive the ventilators promised by President Trump.

He told journalists in that once the consignment of ventilators arrive in Nigeria a public announcement would be made.

“To when the ventilators promised by President Trump will arrive. To the best of my knowledge, they have not arrived. When they do arrive it will be made known to the public,” Mohammed said.

Nigeria has recorded more than 8,915 coronavirus cases including 259 deaths and is one of the most hard hit countries in Africa.
