All parliamentarians in Botswana including President Mokgweetsi Masisi have been placed in a 14 day quarantine.

They are to be tested for the coronavirus after a health worker within the parliamentary facility tested positive for the virus.

The said health worker had spent days screening lawmakers for the virus only to be infected.

The country’s Health Minister Lemogang Kwape told lawmakers on Thursday that the health worker had tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday night.

The health worker checked the temperatures of some of the lawmakers on Wednesday during a special sitting of parliament.

“The health worker had not shown any symptoms but had just taken a routine test. Unfortunately, the result came late on Wednesday after she was on duty at yesterday’s parliament session,” Kwape told the MPs.

Lawmakers have been asked to quarantine themselves including President Masisi who is also a member of parliament.

Masisi himself had recently concluded a 14 day quarantine after he returned from Namibia in March.

Botswana is currently under a lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The country so far has recorded 13 cases of the virus.
