Ivory Coast on Wednesday recorded its first case of coronavirus.

A statement from the country’s Health Ministry said that the patient is a 45-year-old Ivorian man who had recently traveled to Italy.

“On 10th March, the Adjame-Plateau-Attecoube was notified of a suspected case of Coronavirus.

The patient is a 45-year old Ivorian man who had returned from Italy who showed symptoms of fever, cough and flu”, the statement said.

The statement added that tests conducted on the patient proved positive for coronavirus.

The patient was immediately transferred to the Treichville Hospital but is currently stable and recovering.

Persons said to have come into close contact with the patient have also been identified for close observation.

Several African countries record cases

Ivory Coast has become the latest African country to record cases of the deadly coronacirus.

The other countries are, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo and Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo and South Africa.

Ivory Coast back in January was the first country to record a suspected case which turned out negative.

The country like many others received testing capacity from the World Health Organization, WHO.

Meanwhile the World Health Organization has declared the coronavirus sweeping across the world a pandemic.

There are now over 118,000 cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, in 114 countries around the world.

There are large outbreaks of the virus in China, Italy and South Korea, and the United States.
