At least 17 soldiers have been reportedly killed in a deadly attack carried out by Boko Haram militants in Nigeria.

Local media reported that many others have been abducted in two confrontations on Friday and Saturday between soldiers and Boko Haram fighters on Bama-Gwoza highway in Maiduguri.

There were casualties on the side of the Boko Haram fighters also and are said to be higher.

According to sources within the Nigerian military, 13 soldiers were killed in the crossfire that took over two hours.

The insurgents also carted away some arms, ammunition and vehicles belonging to the Nigerian Army.

One source said, “During the crossfire started around 10pm, 13 soldiers were killed with four of their vehicles taken away.

“On Saturday, the insurgents came back to the same area to continue from where they left.”

This month about 20 soldiers were also killed and nearly 1,000 people were made homeless in a militant attack on a town in northeastern Nigeria.

Boko Haram’s decade-long insurgency campaign has killed thousands and displaced millions in northeastern Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has said on several occasions that militant group Boko Haram has been defeated.

That claim has been ridiculed several times by critics of the government who say that cannot be true when Boko Haram continues to kill through unending attacks.
