The cause of death of Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe has been revealed by the current President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mugabe is reported to have died from cancer after his chemotherapy treatment was stopped.
Local state-run Herald newspaper quoted his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa as saying that “In fact, when we discussed about the issue, it turned out that treatment had stopped.
He told Zanu PF supporters in New York that “doctors had stopped treatment, chemotherapy, one, because of age and also because the cancer had spread and it was not helping anymore.”
“He would have come back home, but the family said they wanted to remain. Of course, they would have wanted me to come to Singapore, but also we had our Vice President General (Constantino) Chiwenga, who is in a military hospital in Beijing, who was going into a major operation and those two demands,” Mnangagwa said.
Mugabe died this month in Singapore with a state funeral already held in his honour.
But the 95-year-old former leader will be buried later when a mausoleum still under construction at Heroes Acre is completed.
The hilltop shrine is located just outside the capital, Harare, where many of the country’s most prominent liberation fighters have been laid to rest.
Mugabe led Zimbabwe to independence in 1980 and ruled the country for 37 years until he resigned in November 2017.
