Algeria’s interim president Abdelkader Bensalah has announced in a televised speech on Sunday that presidential election will take place this year.
According to Bensalah, an election to choose a new president will take place on December 12.
Algerians for months now have been agitating, demanding political reforms in the North African nation.
They wanted a complete overhaul of the political structure in the country after such protests for most parts of this year forced former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika out of power.
Bouteflika had ruled for 20 years and wanted to continue but eventually bowed to pressure to quit in April.
Abdelkader Bensalah was appointed as interim president of the country in April but protesters have been unhappy with such an arrangement.
Bensalah was the speaker of Algeria’s upper house parliament and has been in charge of the country so far. He will remain in power until the next election.
Young people make up about 70% of the country’s population. Any future election is crucial for them in seeking a new direction for the country.
Unemployment remains high among Algeria’s young people, making them very anxious for a change.
