Family of Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe has now agreed for him to be buried at the Heroes’ Acre national monument near the capital, Harare.

The final burial place of the former leader has been contentious for days now since his death.

The family wanted a private burial ceremony which was not to take place at the Heroes park in Harare.

But Mugabe’s nephew Leo Mugabe who is the family’s spokesman told the BBC that the burial would now take place at the proposed site made by the government.

Burial will however not take place on Sunday as had been expected after the state funeral on Saturday.

Leo said there will be a public ceremony at Heroes’ Acre on Sunday, but Mugabe will not be buried then.

His body will be returned to his home village in Kutama where clan chiefs and relatives will be allowed to perform their own ceremonies.

He will then be buried at a later date in a private ceremony at Heroes Acre.

Stampede at viewing

Meanwhile there was stampede at the viewing of the body of Robert Mugabe at the Rufaro Stadium on Thursday.

Several people sustained injuries during the stampede as scores line up to have a final viewing of Mugabe’s body.

Zimbabwe has declared Mugabe a national hero. Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924, in what was then Rhodesia.

He led Zimbabwe to independence in 1980 and has ruled the country for decades.

Mugabe was Zimbabwe’s first post-independence leader but resigned from power after a military takeover in November 2017.

Robert Mugabe first served as prime minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and then as president from 1987 to 2017.
