Libyan navy officials have said that at least 116 migrants are missing after the boat they were traveling in capsized off the coast of Komas.

Komas is a town east of the capital Tripoli. Libyan navy spokesman Ayoub Qassem said on Thursday that another 132 migrants were rescued by Libyan coast guards.

The rescue effort was assisted by local fishermen after the wooden boat capsized.

Reuters quotes Qassem as saying that survivors said there had been more than 200 migrants on board the boat.

Hundreds of migrants continue to endure dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean to reach Europe.

Several of these migrants die in the process in shipwrecks but it doesn’t deter many from embarking on the journey.

This month dozens of African migrants also died after a boat they were traveling in capsized off the coast of Tunisia.

The boat had set off from Libya heading for Europe before the accident with only four initial survivors.

North Africa remains a major access route for migrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean to Europe for greener pasture.

Libya continues to be the main point of departure for many African migrants.
