An Ethiopian athlete Hagos Gebrhiwet has explained that he was confused during last Friday’s 5,000m race in the Diamond League event in Switzerland.

He was seen stopping during the race while leading with just a lap to go.

The 25-year-old is currently ranked second in the world in the event.

He was seen celebrating while crossing the finish line but he had not completed the entire 5,000m race.

Gebrhiwet only run 4,600m but said he was confused by photographers.

He ignored the bell that was being rung, indicating that there was one lap to go.

Gebrhiwet told the BBC that “When I was leading I saw cameramen in front of me and I thought it was the end.”

He adds that “I was confused. When I saw others pass me I started to run. I don’t know how I finished the race, but this was an unfortunate event.”

Gebrhiwet however finished 10th after losing his momentum passed by the other athletes.

Another Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha however won the race.
