A court in Mauritania has ruled confirming ruling party candidate in last month’s presidential election, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani as the deserved winner.
That finally confirmed Ghazouani’s election victory and paves way for him to assume role of the country’s next president.
The court dismissed the appeal filed by opposition candidates in the election who made allegations of voting irregularities.
Mauritania’s electoral commission had declared Mohamed Ould Ghazouani winner of the election with 52% of the vote.
Ghazouani’s nearest challenger in the election was Biram Dah Abeid, a prominent black Mauritanian slavery campaigner.
Biram Dah Abeid, came second with 18.58%, while third place candidate Mohamed Ould Boubacar, who is backed by Mauritania’s biggest Islamist party, got 17.85%.
The African Union had said it was satisfied with the electoral process. But opposition parties disagreed.
The Constitutional Council member Haimoud Ba told reporters that “The candidate (Mohamed Ould Ghazouani) … is proclaimed president, having acquired an absolute majority in the first round.”
Council President Bathia Mamadou Diallo also stressed at the press conference on Monday that “Ninety-nine percent of the arguments are general allegations. No proof was provided.”
Ghazouani is the country’s defence minister and a close ally of the current president Ould Abdel Aziz.
