Over a dozen people in some villages in Nigeria’s north-western state of Katsina were slaughtered on Tuesday by unknown gunmen.

Police and local officials say at least 14 villagers were killed in the attack.

The BBC quotes a local politician, Abdul Jalal Haruna Runka saying that the gunmen arrived in the village on motorbikes shooting people and burning houses.

The villages that were affected include Gobirawa and Sabawa. According to authorities the area has witnessed series of attacks by gunmen in a period of one week.

Several people have died with many more injured in these attacks.

Katsina is among other states in Nigeria that have in the past months witnessed series of attacks and kidnappings.

Some of the attacks are carried out by militants linked to Boko Haram while others are vigilantes.

There have also been ethnic fueled attacks with the government struggling to bring such violence under control.

President Muhammadu Buhari during his first term in office promised to tackle some of these violent incidences.

The army and police are yet to find a solution to the numerous violent attacks resulting in the deaths of ordinary Nigerians.
