Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has sacked his deputy Ousainou Darboe and has replaced him with a woman.
Darboe was replaced by a former minister Fatoumatou Jallow Tambajang.
That means President Barrow has had two women taking up the role of his deputy in three years.
Barrow has not given a clear reason for the sacking and the reshuffle to his cabinet.
In a statement on Friday his office said the vice president Darboe “has been relieved of his cabinet appointment” with the sacking taking an “immediate effect.”
The President per Gambia’s constitution has the freedom and authority to make such changes to his cabinet.
The Gambian leader also sacked other ministers including Agriculture Minister, Lamin Dibba and Minister for Trade, Regional Integration, Industry, and Employment, Amadou Sanneh.
Both minister were seen as key political allies of Darboe. They all played a major in the then opposition coalition that helped to topple Yahya Jammeh’s regime.
Darboe was imprisoned prior to the opposition coalition winning the 2016 elections.
Upon his release from prison he was appointed Foreign Affairs Minister but got elevated to the Vice president position in June 2018.
