A bomb exploded on Tuesday in Burkina Faso’s northern town of Djibo near the border with Mali killing two soldiers.
The bomb was hidden in a corpse, dressed in military uniform. It exploded when an attempt was made to overturn the corpse, the country’s army said on Thursday.
A statement from the army said “The body, which turned out to be a trap, exploded when it was handled. It killed “two soldiers and wounding six, three of them seriously”, the statement added.
AFP also reported that an army doctor was killed on the spot when the bomb exploded. Several others also sustained injuries.
A source told AFP that soldiers and police asked to go and inspect the corpse after it was abandoned on a road.
The source was quoted as saying that the doctor “died in the explosion of a booby-trapped dead body containing an improvised explosive device”.
He adds that “The bomb was detonated by an attempt to turn the body over, directly killing the army doctor and wounding two other team members”.
Terrorism is still a major issue in the Sahel region which include Burkina Faso.
Over the past one month over 40 people have been killed as well by ethnic violence sparked by Islamist militants.
Just this year 37 people in central Mali were also killed by armed men. Those killed are reportedly from the Fulani ethnic group.
Some Fulani communities are accused of hiding some of these militants who continue to launch deadly attacks.
