Three foreign staff of Telecommunication firm MTN have been deported from Uganda for various offences.
The three are Olivier Prentout, Marketing Chief Officer, deported to France, General Manager of Sales and Distribution, Annie Tabura deported to Rwanda.
Elsa Mussolini, General Manager of Mobile Money has also been deported to Italy.
Mr Prentout was picked up for questioning several hours at the Entebbe International Airport in Kampala upon his return from a business trip.
Tabura was also subsequently picked up from the Telecom firm’s headquarters in the Capital Kampala after reporting for work.
They were both accused by the Police of using their offices to access information and tap calls, allegedly compromising the east African country’s national security.
The Italian staff, Mussolini was also subsequently questioned several hours by the Special Investigation Department in the presence of the firms CEO and Corporate Affairs Manager before being deported to Italy.
Mussolini is reported to have told colleagues that she was accused of inciting violence by transferring huge sums of money to Musician and legislator Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine during a recent demonstration over taxes on social media services.
Last year in July, MTN Uganda’s officers were raided by police leading to the disconnection of four of its servers.
It is not clear whether the deportations are linked to the office raid or totally independent.
MTN which operates in 22 countries has been operating in Uganda for the past twenty years.
