Seventeen people are reported to have died mysteriously in Tema, a city 25-kilometers east of Ghana’s capital city, Accra.
The deaths have aroused anxiety among residents. A traditional priest in the area Agbafoitse Nii Abor Kome, attributed the deaths to a curse on the community.
He advised the residents to take spiritual bath in the sea to purify themselves. Residents according to local media are thronging the sea to heed the advice.
Stated owned media, Daily Graphic reports that Ghana’s Health Service (GHS) has dispatched officials to the community to investigate the deaths.
Mysterious deaths not spiritual
Ghana’s Ministry of Health Ministry on Thursday rejected claims that the deaths were spiritual.
The Ministry, in a statement said the deaths were unrelated. It said “The persons died from different medical conditions that are not linked and are not infectious.”
“The possible causes of deaths included the following: Knife Wounds, Severe Head Injury, Acute Alcoholic Intoxication, Cardiac Failure, Lymphatic Filariasis with Cellulitis and Ectopic Pregnancy.
“Majority of these listed causes of death are actually lifestyle related,” said the Ministry in its statement.
