Football’s world governing body, FIFA on Tuesday announced that it has banned former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi for life.
The ban covers all football-related activities by FIFA. FIFA says Mr. Nyantakyi violated the governing body’s ethics code, including bribery and corruption.
Mr. Nyantakyi who is a former member of FIFA’s General Council was this year caught on tape negotiating a dubious sponsorship deal while demanding $15 million as bribe.
The former FA boss was exposed in a documentary by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas detailing the level of corruption in Ghana football.
The documentary also showed football officials including referees and management official taking bribe to influence matches.
FIFA says it found Mr. Nyantakyi guilty of breaching several of its ethics code after reviewing the documentary. He has also been fined $498,000.
A statement from FIFA says “The adjudicatory chamber found Mr Nyantakyi guilty of having violated art. 19 (Conflicts of interest), art. 21 (Bribery and corruption) and art. 22 (Commission) of the FIFA Code of Ethics.
“As a consequence, Mr Nyantakyi is banned for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level.
Additionally, a fine in the amount of CHF 500,000 has been imposed on Mr Nyantakyi.”
