South Africans are in shock following news of the sudden death of hip hop artists HHP aged 38.
The rapper known in private life as Jabulani Tsambo died on Wednesday. His booking agent, Ofentse Mothusi, confirmed the musician’s death to local media.
HHP is known for making hip hop popular in South Africa, rapping in indigenous languages. Officials are yet to make public the cause of death.
Local media however reports that the rapper has struggled with depression in recent years.
In 2016 he spoke publicly about his struggle with depression.
Tsambo had love for music at a tender age. Channel24 reports that he teamed up with his high school friends to start the group Verbal Assassins as a teenager.
The rapper later adopted the stage name Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP).
South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress, has expressed shock.
In a statement ANC said it “joins millions of South Africans in paying tribute to this music icon who became a beacon of hope and inspired many artists, and individuals in our country”.
“He left an indelible mark in the country and his inspirational music will continue [to] reverberate [in] our ears for many years to come,” the statement added.
