They were promised greener pastures in Europe but now live in anguish hoping to secure their freedom one day.
That’s the story of many Nigerian women trafficked to France’s capital Paris through deception by human traffickers.
They are trafficked from their home country by these trafficking syndicates to work in descent jobs but have now become ‘sex-slaves’.
CNN reports that some of these young women barely can gain their freedom due to the conditions under which they work.
Their passports have been seized by the traffickers who make them work for long hours and years.
Paying off huge debt
The women will have to pay off the cost of sending them to France under oath. They fear to escape due to the oath they took.
In a CNN freedom project report, the American news network spoke to one of these women who escaped from the traffickers.
Named as Nadège she told CNN that “Even now I don’t have hope for myself. My past already destroyed my future.”
Nadège revealed that she was trafficked from Nigeria to France and forced into sexual slavery.
She has to sleep with each client at the cost of $23. That is to help her pay off her debt to a female Nigerian pimp known as a “madam.”
Her debt she said was 57,690 but other women are made to pay more than that. Nadège is expected to pay her madam a €100 daily target.
Nadège whose upbringing was a difficult one is also a rape victim back in Nigeria. With nobody to help her through live, she like many fall victim to traffickers.
Paradise now hell
“I was told it was like a paradise,” Nadège told CNN. “But getting here, it was like from frying pan to fire.”
Nadège was made to swear an oath at a “juju” temple. She swore to repay her madam for sending her to Europe.
Many of these women swear not to talk about the oath, or their debt to anyone. That is where their fear originates from.
The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) revealed that the recruitment for trafficking to Europe is largely based in the Edo state in the south of Nigeria.
This story resonates across parts of Africa where young people both men and women are duped into traveling to Europe and America.
They hope for better opportunities abroad but the ordeal is usually regrettable for many.
African governments continue to struggle to create better opportunities for young people in order for them to stay in their home countries.
