Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo Addo has appointed a new chairperson for the country’s electoral commission.

The appointment of Jean Mensa became necessary after the sacking of the previous chairperson, Charlotte Osei and two other commissioners.

The previous chairperson was sacked by the President “on the basis of stated misbehavior and incompetence”.

Charlotte Osei during her tenure also had issues with her two deputies. Their frosty relationship some analysts say affected the running of the commission.

The dismissal of Charlotte Osei followed a petition from some employees of the Electoral Commission to the president.

The workers claimed Mrs. Osei abused her office in the award of contracts.

A committee was set up by Ghana’s Chief Justice to probe the allegations further. The committee recommended for her removal.

The new chairperson, Jean Mensa before this latest appointment has been the executive director of a private policy think tank, Institute of Economic Affairs.

In a statement Ghana’s Presidency said the new chairperson and three other commissioners who have also been appointed will be confirmed after consultation with the country’s council of state.

“President Akufo-Addo is hopeful that the Council of State will discharge its constitutional duty expeditiously, to enable hint make these critical appointments to this very important institution of State, ” the statement added.
