There has been unrest in South Africa’s Hermanus community with police firing rubber bullet to disperse rioting residents.
Rubber bullets and teargas were fired overnight in the community, local media reports.
News24 reports that the unrest is as a result of claims that a local community activist was facing police arrest.
Chaos overnight
Local media reports that on Wednesday residents burnt tyres, blocked roads and threw stones at the police.
Some 1,000 protesters mobilized themselves to agitate over the said intended arrest of the local activist.
A Police official at Hermanus Colonel Luthando Nosilela says the situation was “volatile but under control”.
The protesters claim charges of incitement of violence and destruction of public property were laid against the local activist, Gcobani Ndzongana.
The police have denied there are any attempts to arrest the activist.
Colonel Nosilela is quoted by News24 as saying “We don’t have any information. We can’t arrest anyone with emotion. We arrest on facts”.
