Newspaper workers in Liberia who have been critical of the government of President George Weah have been arrested.
Local media reported that officials from the country’s court stormed the offices of the newspaper company, FrontPage Africa on Monday arresting and detaining editors, journalists and other managers.
Those arrested were detained for several hours at the civil court in the country’s capital, Monrovia in pursuit of a law suit against the company.
The newspaper company has been sued for $1m over allegedly publishing misleading material.
The media outlet has condemned the arrest describing it as an attack on press freedom and an attempt to undermine its investigative journalism.
George Weah, the former football star now president was sworn in as the new president of Liberia taking over from the continent’s first democratically elected female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
That was the first time in over 70 years that Liberia witnessed the peaceful transfer of power from one government to the other after a peaceful electoral process.
George Weah, the 25th president of the West African nation is hoping to transform the country by creating jobs and providing improved social amenities.
