Six college students in Polokwane in South Africa on Thursday sustained injuries in a stampede as they undergo registration to enroll in the Capricorn TVT College.
Police have confirmed the incident saying one of those injured had serious injuries. Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the incident occurred when the applicants were “jostling for access”.
“The injured applicant was transported to Pietersburg Provincial Hospital for medical treatment. The condition of the injured person cannot be confirmed as of now,” Mojapelo said is quoted by News24 as saying.
Police were deployed to the campus of the school to restore calm and enable students to go through the registration process without further challenges.
Local media reported that large number of students had gathered outside the campus building, waiting for the gates to open in order to register, when the stampede took place.
The Capricorn College was forced to suspend registration following the incident.
President Jacob Zuma last month announced that free education would be rolled out to 90% of poor students across South Africa igniting interest from many South Africans to enroll in school.
