The Nigerian government has always claimed that it is winning the war against militant group Boko Haram with series of operations, but the group’s leader Abubaar Shekau has rejected that in a new released video.
In the new video released on Tuesday, Shekau claimed that his group carried out the various attacks recorded in northeast Nigeria during the festive season last year.
“We are in good health and nothing has happened to us,” Shekau said in a video that lasted for 31 minutes.
He spoke in the Hausa language saying “Nigerian troops, police and those creating mischief against us can’t do anything against us, and you will gain nothing”.
“We carried out the attacks in Maiduguri, in Gamboru, in Damboa. We carried out all these attacks” the Boko Haram leader said.
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari in his New Year address announced that Boko Haram has been “beaten” but added that “Isolated attacks still occur, but even the best-policed countries cannot prevent determined criminals from committing terrible acts of terror”.
Shekau has been defiant in previous videos since taking over from the group’s founder Muhammad Yusuf in 2009 after his death.
Millions have been displaced and thousands killed due to Boko Haram attacks.
