Ghanaians living in the diaspora will now have the chance to participate in their country’s general elections after a high court on Monday ruled asking the electoral commission to ensure that they are involved in future elections.
The Human Rights High Court has ordered Ghana’s Electoral Commission to as a matter of urgency take all necessary steps to implement the country’s 11 year old Representation of the People Amendment Act 2006.
The act allows all Ghanaians in the diaspora to also vote in general elections without traveling back home to do so.
The court said the implementation must be carried out within the next one year.
The court in its judgement said the Electoral Commission (EC) has no justifiable reason not to implement the law saying justification for the delay in implementing the law is unreasonable and outrageous.
Ghana’s next general elections would take place in 2020 and those living abroad are hoping to vote in those elections after Monday court ruling.
