The Liberian Supreme Court has started hearing the petition filed by two political parties claiming that the October Presidential election was characterized by fraud.
The parties are demanding a re-run of the poll after the electoral commission rejected their claims of fraud in the election. The Liberia’s Supreme Court started the hearing on Friday.
A leader of the Liberty party, Darius Dillon told journalists that “We remain optimistic till the final ruling is given. This is the rule of law and the Supreme Court is the final decision-making body.”
Liberty party’s leader Charles Brumskine and the incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai of the Unity party are those who have petitioned the Supreme Court over the elections.
They filed the petition on Monday and are hoping the court rules in their favour with the Supreme Court is expected to give its ruling on Thursday.
The electoral commission of Liberia had announced that Boakai would face football star George Weah – in a runoff on November 7 but claims of fraud in the October election halted the process after the Supreme Court asked for the National Elections Commission (NEC) to hear the complaints of the parties that raised the concerns.
Liberia is hoping to choose a new leader to succeed President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace Laureate and Africa’s first elected female leader who is stepping down next year.
