The embattled President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe has no intention of stepping down until his tenure ends as pressure mounts on him to cede power.

Reuters reported that one of Mugabe’s nephews, Patrick Zhuwao has said that the 93-year-old leader and his wife Grace are “ready to die for what is correct”.

Zhuwao is reported by Reuters to have said that President Mugabe believes stepping down would only legitimise military takeover.

The military has placed Mr. Mugabe under house arrest but there are no signals of where his wife is currently.

Mugabe is reported to have had little sleep since the military seized power on Wednesday but was in good health.

On Saturday thousands of Zimbabweans marched on the streets of Harare demanding that their president steps down.

The military backed the street protest as it continues to negotiate a way out with President Mugabe.

The rally was called by the Zanu PF party which has already resolved to ask Mr. Mugabe to step down or be recalled by the party.

The provinces have also called for the reinstatement of the sacked former Vice President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa claiming his expulsion was illegal.

Further talks are still expected this weekend.

Robert Mugabe has been leader of Zimbabwe since 1980 after leading his country to gain independence from the British.
