UNICEF has confirmed that it’s Ghanaian director Charlotte Nikoi who went missing months ago in South Africa is dead.
Unicef in a statement said the decomposed body of a woman discovered on Table Mountain in Cape Town was that of Nikoi.
It said that “Nana Yaa devoted the past 18 years of her life to the work and values of the United Nations. She began her UN career at the World Food Programme, where she rose through the ranks as a dedicated human resources officer.”
Nikoi “following a post at the United Nations Population Fund, joined UNICEF on secondment in 2016 as Associate Director in the Division of Human Resources, where she helped design and implement initiatives to strengthen UNICEF’s workforce and build our talent pool.”
In March there were reports of Charlotte Nikoi disappearing on the Table Mountain while hiking with her family.
Her husband Chris had said that he, Nikoi and their daughter went for a walk on the mountain on Human Rights Day, March 21, but Nikoi said she was turning back and were supposed to meet again at an agreed location.
The UNICEF statement further said that “Those who knew and worked with Nana Yaa at UNICEF remember her as a warm, supportive colleague and friend with a bright smile who was always a pleasure to work with. She will be deeply missed. I know we all offer our particular condolences to her colleagues in DHR.”
Some of her friends have taken to social media to mourn her death.
