The strength and threat posed by newly formed opposition coalition in Zimbabwe have been ridiculed by loyalists to President Robert Mugabe.
Media outlets loyal to the government have questioned the potency of the opposition coalition set to defeat Mr. Mugabe in next year’s general elections.
Last week opposition leaders including Morgan Tsvangirai and Joyce Mujuru announced a new political coalition focused at defeating Mr. Mugabe and his ruling Zanu-PF party.
Some analysts believe this coalition can cause a major upset in the upcoming elections but the state-owned Chronicle newspaper in an editorial said the opposition coalition can not serve the interest of Zimbabweans.
“Zanu-PF is a party that is rightly beholden to the electorate and does not waste its time wanting to please foreigners. If Zanu-PF had ended there and folded its arms basking in old glory, coalitions like the one Mr. Tsvangirai et al are working on could have posed an electoral threat to the party,” the editorial stated.
Another news portal the Sunday Mail had one of its columnist writing and describing the opposition coalition as ‘gullible.’
The new coalition is led by former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and former Vice President Joyce Mujuru. Attempts are being made to woo other smaller opposition parties to join the coalition.
