The Speaker of South Africa’s parliament, Baleka Mbete is coming under intense pressure to call for an early debate on a motion of no-confidence vote on Jacob Zuma.
The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) filed the motion shortly after President Zuma sacked his finance minister, Pravin Gordhan in a ministerial reshuffle.
Baleka Mbete has said she will consider the motion but News24 in South Africa reported that civil society organisations want Parliament to be reconvened quickly for a special sitting to debate the motion.
The organisations totally 65 wrote to National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete on Tuesday, asking for the sitting to be reconvened as a “matter of immediate priority” by Friday.
They said in that letter that “We are gravely concerned at the current state of South Africa’s democracy and consider it of critical importance for the National Assembly to address this as an immediate priority”.
