There is public outrage in Nigeria after a female student at the University of Benin, died on Saturday after being raped inside a church.

Local media reported that the victim, Vera Uwa Omozuwa was raped inside the Redeemed Christian Church of God building on Wednesday.

She had visited the said church to read only for some men to rush inside, struck her in the head with a fire extinguisher, then raped her and left her for dead.

Omozuwa was found in a pool of blood by a security guard at the church who then informed his superiors at the church.

The 22-year-old victim, was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital while being unconscious.

When she gained consciousness she narrated her ordeal but later succumbed to her injuries three days later.

Omozuwa just gained admission into university to read Microbiology and was yet to even matriculate before her death on Saturday.

Public outrage

There have been outrage all over social media with the hashtag #JusticeforUWA.

Police have now launched investigations into the crime with pressure mounting on them to arrest the culprits and bring them to book.
