Ghanaian health workers at the front-line of fighting the outbreak of coronavirus are lamenting the lack of protective equipment gears.
Some of them who spoke to AfricaFeeds.com say they have been exposed to danger for not getting these protective gears.
Several doctors and nurses at Ghana’s premier teaching hospital Korle Bu teaching hospital for example have told our reporters that they might consider not working if tools needed for work are not provided.
Ghana so far has recorded six cases but there are fears the number of infections could rise as people go in for more tests.
Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo announced that his government was allocating some $100 million for the fight against Coronavirus.
But the Ghana registered nurses and midwifery association last week told its members to abandon work if government fails to give them the needed equipment to work with.
A nurse speaking to Africafeeds.com on condition of anonymity at the Korle Bu teaching hospital revealed that government has failed to provide them with gloves, face masks, hand sanitizers and other essentials needed to use when attending to patients.
The nurse said “It’s very scary because as I speak to you there are no such basic things to use and we are putting our lives in danger too”.
“I have complained several times but our authorities keep assuring us every day that we will get those things but still nothing for us to work with in these hard times” the nurse told Africafeeds.com
Coronavirus so far has been reported in at least 26 African countries with over 270 cases in total.
There are at least six deaths so far from a pandemic which started in China last December.
Over 200,000 people have been infected globally with over 6,000 deaths so far, bringing the world to a standstill.
