Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo has appealed to Ghanaians to immediately halt all foreign travels excerpt for those that would be critical.

He is hopeful that would help prevent the spread of the coronavirus within Ghana.

The President made this appeal after neighouring countries, namely Togo, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso all recorded cases.

On Wednesday evening President Akufo-Addo in a national broadcast said his government had allocated $100 million to keep Ghana alert to fight the possible outbreak of the virus.

Ghana so far has recorded over 50 suspected cases of the coronavirus but is yet to confirm a positive case.

On Tuesday President Akufo-Addo suspended temporarily all foreign travels for all public officials.

The ban affects all sector Ministers and their deputies, Regional Ministers and their deputies, all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, and all Heads of Government Agencies, according to a government statement.

The statement however said only essential and critical foreign travels will be considered and, thereafter, approved by the presidency.

Meanwhile the World Health Organization has declared the coronavirus sweeping across the world a pandemic.

There are now over 118,000 cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, in 114 countries around the world.

There are large outbreaks of the virus in China, Italy and South Korea, and the United States.

Eleven countries in Africa have recorded a total of over 100 cases with only two deaths although some patients have recovered.
