Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control boss Chikwe Ihekweazu, has been quarantined for 14 days, according to the country’s health minister.
Dr. Osagie Ehanire told Nigerian lawmakers on Tuesday that the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control returned from China recently.
Ehanire says the move is to ensure that Ihekweazu doesn’t pose any danger to society in case he had contracted Coronavirus.
He would however be allowed to mingle with society after the 14-day period, if he doesn’t test positive for the disease.
The health minister however allayed fears saying the move was a standard practice for anyone coming into Nigeria.
Nigeria has already confirmed one case of coronavirus, with the patient been an Italian who traveled to the country last month.
Tunisia and Senegal, Egypt and Algeria are the other African countries that have also confirmed cases.
More than 90,000 cases and over 3,000 deaths have been recorded in some 60 countries worldwide with Africa still relatively reporting low outbreak rate.
Victims of coronavirus often suffer from respiratory illness and this new strain of coronavirus was not previously identified in humans.
