Nigerian President,  Muhammadu Buhari who has traveled abroad several times for medical treatment wants Nigerians to stop going abroad for medical treatment.

In a speech read on his behalf by a representative, Buhari said “Nigerians have suffered so much going abroad for medical treatment. This is not good for us and it must stop because we can’t afford it again”.

Buhari’s statement was made at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, during its inauguration.

President Buhari shortly after becoming President spent weeks in the United Kingdom seeking medical treatment.

His decision to go on a medical leave in London sparked controversy over his health and whether he could continue to serve as President.

President Buhari contested for president in 2003, 2007 and 2011 but only became successful and 2015 and 2019.

He has promised to step down and exit politics when his second term ends in 2023.

In his new year message to Nigerians he said “I will be standing down in 2023 and will not be available in any future elections.

But I am determined to help strengthen the electoral process both in Nigeria and across the region, where several ECOWAS members go to the polls this year.”

Buhari said his priority during the remainder of his tenure is “the security of the nation and the safety of our citizens.”
