A demonstration to oppose constitutional amendments that could allow Guinean President Alpha Conde to run for a third term has left at least five people dead.
The Police clashed with demonstrators in the capital, Conakry and the opposition stronghold of Mamou.
At least four demonstrators were reportedly shot dead in Conakry as police opened fire on protesters.
Opposition leader Cellou Diallo has told reporters that four protesters had been shot dead.
He hinted that the protests will continue until the plan to give President Conde a third term is aborted.
“We encourage citizens to continue to demonstrate – today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow – until our legitimate demands are satisfied,” he said.
“We need a clear, firm and irrevocable declaration from Alpha Conde renouncing a third term.”
But Government spokesman Damantang Albert Camara has described the protests as provocative.
“The goal of the demonstration, which was meant to be insurrectional, was clearly to provoke a violent response from the military to cause a lot of deaths in order to inflame the situation,” Camara said.
Human rights group Amnesty International has condemned the four deaths in the capital and urged the security forces to “refrain from using excessive and deadly force”.
