Top Sudanese army generals have been arrested for attempting another coup, according to the leadership of the army.

The exact number of officials arrested is unknown but some of those arrested are senior members of the former governing National Congress Party (NCP).

The Sudanese army leadership has also not revealed when the attempted coup took place.

Those arrested include the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Hashim Abdel Mottalib Ahmed, and the head of the armoured brigade, Maj Gen Nasr al-Din.

The former Vice-President Bakri Hassan Salih and a foreign minister who had served under the deposed President Omar al-Bashir have also been detained.

According to a military statement the failed coup was an attempt to return the former NCP regime to power.

The new head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Mohamed Othman al-Hussein said “The failed coup attempt’s goal was… to disrupt the path before the expected political solution that aims to establish a civilian state that the Sudanese people dream of.’’

The military leadership and the opposition have entered into an agreement to share power over the next three years in a transition towards a civilian government

Meanwhile Sudanese opposition parties and an alliance of rebel groups have signed an agreement that will guide their participation in a future transition government.

Sudanese news websites has reported that representatives of the Forces of the Declaration of Freedom and Change (FFC) have been meeting the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF), an umbrella of armed opposition groups in Ethiopia.

Baj News website said the two sides agreed to “work towards the establishment of a civilian and democratic regime”.
