Two South African women have been burnt to death after being stripped naked in Limpopo.
Police on Saturday revealed that the two women were victims of mob justice following the discovery of a missing boy’s body in a river.
12-year-old Thabelo Muila went missing on June 10, according to News24 after disappearing while playing with his friends.
But his body was retrieved from a river on Friday. Some residents then mobilised late Friday to attack these two women.
A security official Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo told the media that the residents “attacked the two women with various objects, stripped them naked before setting them alight.”
“One woman was certified dead on the scene whereas another died later in hospital. When the police arrived at the scene, the crowd had already dispersed,” said Mojapelo.
Police identified the women as Hulumeni Sarah Masiagwala and Mudziwa Esther, both from Matsindevhe village.
Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the incident.
He said “The police will continue to deal mercilessly with every person who resorts to taking the law into their own hands. Community members are warned to refrain from these heinous acts and they should instead co-operate with the police.”
