The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has accused the United State of America of being jealous of China.
China and the U.S. are currently locked up in a trade war which is affecting businesses associated with the two countries.
Recently Chinese company Huawei became a major component of this trade war.
President Donald Trump at this year’s G20 summit said he had agreed to loosen restrictions on Huawei after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
South Africa’s President said many of the actions taken by the U.S. are born out of jealousy.
He said his country cannot allow its economy to be held back by the U.S.-China trade war.
Ramaphosa told the Digital Economy Summit on Friday that “We cannot afford to have our own economy being held back as there is this fight that the U.S is fighting born out of their own jealousy.”
He said some South African companies have asked him to intervene in the trade way.
“They said, Mr President, this tussle that is happening between China and the United States around a company called Huawei is going to hurt us because we want to go to 5G and only this company Huawei can lead us to 5G but the United States is now punishing them.”
China continues to deepen its presence in Africa, something the United States has warned African countries about.
The U.S. government claimed China’s relationship with Africa has some ulterior motives but China has rejected that.
Many African countries appears to be leaning towards China than the U.S. in recent times.
