Africa Feeds Staff writers are group of African journalists focused on reporting news about the continent and the rest of the world.

Journalism has become an important element of human existence and activities.

Journalists are always telling stories about one thing or the other.

But telling a news story requires proper structure and procedure.

Failing to structure your story well means setting up for failure.

Below are some tips to help you tell a news story:

  • First establish your audience (Who is going to consume your material?)
  • Give your story a focus and purpose (Just one unique and powerful focus is fine. What is your story about?)
  • Don’t mix so many ideas in your story. (Avoid over loading of information for your story. Just one is enough.)
  • Let your audience experience the story. (Take them along and let them feel what you felt. Let them experience what you experienced.)
  • Let the audience connect emotionally to your story
  • Use simple language to tell the story.
  • Good stories should also motivate and inspire as well.
  • Personalize the story so others can relate.
  • You can ask for feedback from a colleague before publishing

These tips are from Isaac Kaledzi, an award winning African journalist.

In our next publication we will give your tips on other journalism skills to help you.
