Details are now emerging from Uganda over the reasons why the Chief Executive Officer of telecom firm MTN was deported.

Wim Vanhelleputte was deported this month according to the Ugandan government for national security reasons.

That reason according to the government due to the tapping of phones of high ranking officials and a security chief.

Local media reports that intelligence operatives kept a keen eye on the MTN CEO. He was phones were subsequently tapped after three officials of the employees were earlier deported.

Those employees all foreign staff of  MTN Uganda were deported for various offences.

The three were Olivier Prentout, Marketing Chief Officer, deported to France, General Manager of Sales and Distribution, Annie Tabura deported to Rwanda.

Elsa Mussolini, General Manager of Mobile Money was also deported to Italy.

They were accused of using their offices to access information and tap calls. The government alleged that that compromised the country’s national security.

MTN has had some issues with the Uganda government lately following a series of issues revolving around security raid at its data center and accusation against reduction in the renewal of its license fee.

The firm  has also been under pressure to cede parts of its shares to locals by listing on the Ugandan Stock Exchange to ensure parts of its earning stays in the East African country.
