Family of a girl kidnapped by Boko Haram militants last year in Nigeria wants her freed.
Leah Sharibu was among some 111 school girls abducted by the militants in February, 2018.
The girls were kidnapped from a Girls’ Science and Technical College in Dapchi in Yobe state.
But after the Nigerian government negotiated for the release of the girls, the militants freed 105 of them.
There were six others who were not released by the militants. Sharibu is said to be among them.
According to local media, she was not freed because she refused renounce her Christian faith.
Leah Sharibu was 14 when she was kidnapped and has spent a year in captivity. But there is no signal of her release anytime soon.
Her family now wants the government and the international community to held rescue their Sharibu.
Leah’s mother Rebecca Sharibu told a news conference in Abuja on Sunday that “The government should keep the promises made by the President and the ministers who visited us in Dapchi in October. They should rescue my daughter.”
Rumors of Leah’s death
There were reports of Leah’s death but the government has described those reports as fake and an attempt to tarnish it’s image ahead of this weekend’s general elections.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed is reported by the Punch to have said that “It is part of the opposition’s strategies to throw everything at the administration and at the President.”
The government has however not made any recent statements about its plans to rescue the remaining girls in captivity.
Boko Haram continues to however launch attacks in parts of the country with the government struggling to put an end to their activities.
