French automobile firm Renault has expressed interest in establishing a plant in Ghana as a long term project.
Senior Vice President and Chairman of Groupe Renault in charge of Africa, Middle-East and India (AMI), Fabrice Cambolive, revealed this after paying an official visit to the West African country.
“For us, we are now to see if our capacity to bring our products to this country are marching with your policy and if it is ok, we will be delighted to do that,” he said.
Mr. Cambolive said “in my short stay, I have noticed a lot of values in the country and they are very important to us”.
“I hope that we will be able to concretize it in a really hard project but not a short term project but a long term project and if everything is marching, we will come back to you as soon as possible,” Fabrice Cambolive said.
On his part Ghana’s President Akufo Addo described the announcement as good news.
He said a conducive environment has been created for the private sector to blossom in Ghana.
President Akuffo Addo said Ghana “is the second largest economy in West Africa so there are lots and lots of reasons why Ghana is a well positioned place for you.”
“We are looking upon ourselves as the gateway to West Africa, to a market of some 350 million people which is scheduled to go up to 500 million people by the year 2030, so we think that it will be a good place for you to make it,” President Akuffo Addo said.
Three auto firms namely Nissan, Volkswagen and Sinotruck are already in the process of establishing assembling plants in Ghana.
They have all signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ghanaian Government last year
In 2016, Renault became the ninth biggest automaker in the world by production volume.
