The Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday rejected a request from the African Union to delay announcing final results from last month’s presidential election.
The African Union has said it doubts the credibility of the election results. It held a meeting on Thursday in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa to find a solution to the ongoing political crisis.
The AU chairperson and Rwandan President Paul Kagame said Thursday’s meeting was to prevent “the people outside of our continent to meddle…trying to find solutions for us”.
But the AU commission chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat says that “Even if the situation on the ground has been fortunately calm so far, it obviously remains a cause for concern.
Frankly, there are serious doubts about the compliance of the results that have been proclaimed.”
DR Congo anger over AU request
On Friday the DR Congo government spokesperson spokesman Lambert Mende said “I do not think anyone has the right to tell the court what to do. I am not under the impression (the AU) fully understands Congo’s judicial process.”
Mende also said that “No country in the world can accept that its judicial process be controlled by an (outside) organisation.”
Last week an opposition presidential candidate filed an appeal in the constitutional court against the election result.
Martin Fayulu has insisted that declared winner of the election Felix Tshisekedi did not win the vote as announced by the election commission.
Judges of the constitutional court now have seven days to deliberate.
The court could confirm Mr Tshisekedi’s victory, order a recount, or cancel the results and order fresh elections.
There are fears of violent reactions when the court decision is delivered in the coming days.
