Five catholic nuns have been kidnapped by gunmen in Nigeria’s Delta State.
Punch reports that the nuns were attacked on their way from a funeral ceremony.
The gunmen stopped the car the nuns were traveling in on a highway, shooting at the vehicle.
Two nuns were reportedly injured in the process before five others were abducted.
A priests reportedly told Punch that “Please, pray for the release of five” Sisters kidnapped.
“The Sisters were on their way from the east where they went for a funeral” the priests added.
The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Mustafa, confirmed the abduction on Friday.
The identities of those kidnapped are yet to be ascertained by police officials.
Kidnapping for ransom is common in parts of Nigeria.
Other kidnappings carried out by militant group Boko Haram are for political purposes with victims often killed.
