Nigeria’s parliament has passed a law setting campaign spending limits for next year’s elections.
The new law now allows for Presidential candidates to spend not more than $14m on their campaigns.
For candidates aspiring for governorship positions, spending limit has been placed at $3m. Those hoping to get to the Senate must not spend beyond $700,000.
For house of Representatives positions, candidates cannot spend beyond $280,000.
These measures are part of an electoral act passed by the lawmakers to improve electioneering processes in Nigeria.
The new measure also also stipulates how electronic card readers, used for the accreditation of voters at polling stations, should work.
It will now be mandatory to use the card readers. Should they fail new ones will be deployed within hours.
Nigerians will go to the polls next year to choose a new President and representatives for other key state positions.
Leading Presidential candidates for the election are incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari and Opposition candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
