The Tanzanian businessman who was abducted a week ago by some unknown men has returned home safely, his family says.
Mohammed Dewji who is considered Africa’s youngest billionaire was kidnapped last week in Tanzania’s economic capital Dar es Salaam.
Dewji, heads the MeTL Group which operates in about 10 countries. He was abducted while entering a gym at a hotel in the city.
On Friday Tanzanian police said they were being assisted by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to search for Dewji.
The Police Inspector General Simon Sirro told journalists in Dar es Salaam that “We have got the information on the car owner and the nationality, the driver who was driving it and our people at Interpol are working on it.”
Dewji’s family had offered financial reward for his rescue. The family said on Monday it will give a reward of $440,000 for any information leading to his rescue.
But on Saturday his family company METL Group tweeted confirming that Dweji has returned home. Dewji was quoted as saying that “I thank the authorities of Tanzania, including the Police Force for working for my safe return.”
“I thank Allah that I have returned home safely. I thank all my fellow Tanzanians, and everyone around the world for their prayers. I thank the authorities of Tanzania, including the Police Force for working for my safe return.”

The motive for Dewji’s earlier kidnapping is still yet unknown. He is estimated by Forbes to be worth $1.5bn.
Police in Tanzania said on Friday that he was kidnapped in a car coming from “a neighbouring country”. They claim to have identified the owner and driver of the car but did not reveal their identify.
Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique are neighbors of Tanzania.
