Nigeria’s biggest opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party is choosing a presidential candidate for next year’s election.

Some 4,000 delegates from the party will decide on Saturday who leads the party. Voting will take in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The winner of the presidential primary will be the main challenger to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Some of the notable contenders are, a former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal.

Other leading contenders are a former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso;   and a former governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa.

Some of the leading contenders for the PDP presidential slot defected from the ruling All Peoples Congress. They accused the President of non-performance.

The winner of the PDP primary is likely to be a person who comes from the Muslim-majority North.

The PDP has an unwritten convention that allows for the party to rotate the presidency every two terms between the north and south.

Police in the Rivers State say officers will be deployed to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, venue of the presidential primary, and other strategic locations and flash points.
