Eight people have been killed in an explosion at a factory in the City of Cape Town in South Africa.
The explosion on Monday occurred at the Denel munitions depot near Somerset West, according to fire and emergency services officials.
A spokesperson for the emergency services, Theo Layne told local media “The City’s Fire and Rescue Service responded to Rheinmetall Denel Munitions Factory at 15:45”.
“On arrival it was ascertained that an explosion had occurred…
“Four persons are confirmed to have sustained fatal injuries and firefighters are currently carrying out search and rescue for a further six persons.”
Officials have been unable to tell what caused the explosion.
News24 reports that the Rheinmetall Denel Munition (Pty) Ltd was established on September 1, 2008.
