An alleged sex-trafficker from Ghana by name Amaka Adiri, has been arrested in Nigeria’s Anambra State.
Local media reports that Adiri was arrested while trying to take two women to Ghana to work as prostitutes.
Punch reports that the suspect asked her victims to pay $1664 (N600,000) each for the trip to Ghana.
The women were to make the payment when they get to Ghana while working as prostitutes. The victims were each going to be freed once they work for the suspect to the tune of $1664.
Police officials were reportedly called upon to make an arrest after one of the victims changed her mind about the trip.
Punch quoted a source saying that “The woman forcefully wanted to take her to Ghana against her conscience; but she refused, describing the conditions she was given as ‘unconscionable.’
“That was when the whole matter was made a Police case.”
A police spokesperson in Anambra State, Haruna Mohammed confirmed the arrest of the trafficker.
Mohammed told the media “Following intelligence report, Police detectives attached to Oyi Division arrested one Amaka Adiri.
“The suspect allegedly threatened one Gold Ebube Nwogazi, aged 21 years, of Ugwunabo LGA of Abia State and seized her bag at Awkuzu in Anambra State for refusing to follow her to Ghana for prostitution.”
He adds that “Preliminary investigations so far revealed that the victims were to pay the sum of N600,000 each to the suspect in three months’ time while in Ghana to regain their freedom.”
There have been series of reports in Ghana about young girls trafficked from Nigeria to Ghana to work as prostitutes.
Many of these victims work in brothels in city centres. Ghana’s laws clamp down on prostitution but authorities have struggled to eliminate brothels operating in most parts of the country.
